Akira 4K Re-Release (2026)

The 4K re-release trailer for Akira announces the return of Katsuhiro Otomo's landmark 1988 anime to the big screen. In the year 2019, Neo-Tokyo is a sprawling city rebuilt after a catastrophic explosion and ruled by biker gangs, protests and secret government projects. When Tetsuo, a member of Kaneda's gang, is caught up in a military experiment, he develops terrifying psychic powers that could destroy the city all over again, and Kaneda has to stop his old friend. Mitsuo Iwata voices Kaneda and Nozomu Sasaki voices Tetsuo. Otomo directs, adapting his own manga. Remastered from the original 35mm film with new IMAX sound, Akira returned to US and Canadian theaters on September 4, 2026, from Crunchyroll and Sony, in Japanese with subtitles and in English.
