Trailer Trash™: did the trailer lie?

Every trailer makes a promise. After a movie comes out, fans who saw it tell us whether the movie kept that promise.

The three verdicts

🏆 Better Than the Trailer. The movie beat its own marketing.

✅ As Advertised. What you saw in the trailer is what you got.

🗑️ Trailer Trash™. The trailer lied. It oversold the movie, sold it as something it isn’t, or spoiled the best parts.

The rules

Only after release. Trailer vs. Movie voting opens once a film is out in theaters or on streaming, and only fans who saw it should vote.

Before release it’s all hype. Upcoming trailers get the Hype Meter instead, a positive score for “did this make you want to see it?” It shows after 48 hours and 100 votes.

It’s about the trailer, not the film. A great movie can still have a Trailer Trash™ trailer, and a so-so movie can be exactly As Advertised.

Quick answers

What does Trailer Trash™ mean?

It is a fan verdict that the trailer lied: it oversold the movie, misled people about what kind of movie it is, or gave away too much.

Who can vote?

Fans who have seen the movie. Voting opens only after the film is released in theaters or on streaming.

Can a trailer get Trailer Trash before the movie comes out?

No. Before release, trailers only get the Hype Meter, which asks whether the trailer made you want to see the movie. A trailer is never labeled Trailer Trash while its campaign is running.

When does a verdict show?

Once enough fans have voted. Until then the page shows that voting is open.

Trailer Trash™ is a trademark of Mainstream Entertainment Group. Trailers and movie titles belong to their respective studios.
