Rob Lowe: The Outsider Trailer: Netflix Doc Arrives November 24
Netflix's first trailer for Chris Smith's Rob Lowe documentary walks from the Brat Pack years through scandal, sobriety and The West Wing.
Netflix has released the official trailer for Rob Lowe: The Outsider, a feature documentary about the actor's four decades in Hollywood. The film premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, November 24.
The director is Chris Smith, the filmmaker behind Fyre and Tiger King. Lowe, now 62, is the subject and the main voice, and the trailer opens on archival footage of a very young Lowe being asked to record a message to himself as an old man.
From there the cut moves through the career most viewers know: his breakout in Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders, the Brat Pack run that included St. Elmo's Fire, and the later television second act on The West Wing and Parks and Recreation.
The trailer does not skip the hard chapters. It points to the 1988 sex tape scandal, his years with a playboy reputation, and his struggle with addiction and the sobriety that followed. His wife of more than 30 years, Sheryl Berkoff, is interviewed, and so are former co-stars Demi Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow. An archival clip of the late Joan Rivers also appears.
Lowe told People that the project took two years to make and that watching the finished film made him realize the road he'd traveled "was completely bananas." Moore and Paltrow are among the famous friends who speak on camera about the years they shared with him.
The title is a nod to the 1983 film that made him famous, and the trailer frames it as a story about lasting in Hollywood, not just getting there. Rob Lowe: The Outsider streams on Netflix starting November 24.
