Jumanji: Open World Trailer 2 Swaps Who's Playing the Avatars

Sony's second trailer for the final Jumanji film puts new players inside Bravestone and Shelly, and brings the game to a snowy Boston on Dec. 25.

Jumanji: Open World opens only in theaters on Dec. 25, and Sony's second trailer, released Oct. 28, shows the twist that sets this sequel apart: the avatars have new people inside them.

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan return as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Professor Shelly Oberon, Mouse Finbar and Ruby Roundhouse. This time the original teenage players are not the ones driving. Johnson's avatar is taken over by the mother of Spencer, Alex Wolff's character, and Black's avatar goes to a male restaurant worker. That produces the trailer's best exchange, with Black telling Johnson "What a woman" and Johnson answering, "Oh, stop."

The setting moves too. The trailer opens on what looks like the Northern Lights over a snowy Boston at Christmas, then reveals that Jumanji is colliding with the real world and letting prehistoric beasts loose in the streets. Spencer, his mother, his young cousin and a local are pulled into the game, where they face a new villain with no extra lives to spare. Sony's synopsis sums it up: the game "breaks free of its console, unleashing its chaos into our world."

Jake Kasdan directs from a script he wrote with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, and Sony is billing the film as the last chapter of the modern trilogy. Kasdan also directed Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.

Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain and Madison Iseman return as the real-world players, along with Nick Jonas and Danny DeVito. Matt Tolmach, Kasdan, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia produce.

The track record explains the Christmas Day date. Welcome to the Jungle passed $950 million worldwide after its December 2017 release, and The Next Level reached $801 million two years later. Open World takes the same holiday slot, and its first trailer arrived in July.

Where to watch: Jumanji: Open World is a theatrical release on Friday, Dec. 25. Sony has not announced a streaming date. You can watch the new trailer above.
